Planning Your Vocal Music

Planning your wedding day will be one of the most memorable times in your life. It will be exciting and at times overwhelming as you prepare to gather before those you love, who will share in your joy of starting a new life together as husband and wife.

You may decide to hire a wedding planner or look to a family member to help with the planning, but the one selection they will not be able to do for you is to select your vocal music. You will want to be personally involved in selecting the lyrics of your wedding songs.

The music you choose will set the mood of your wedding ceremony, and the lyrics to your wedding songs will express your feelings for each other, rejoice in the joy of starting a new life together, acknowledge your faith, and announce the love you have for your family and friends.

Vocal music is an integral part of the marriage service. In a church wedding service songs that direct attention to the glorification of God are favored over those that reflect romantic aspects of love. In these cases the music selection may have to be approved by the church music director. Wedding ceremonies outside the church offer a larger range of musical choices.

Placement of Vocal Music in the Wedding Ceremony

There are many excellent locations during the wedding ceremony for vocal music. Some music placement ideas are: during the lighting of the unity candle and between events, such as the vows and the ring exchange or between the mothers sitting and the processional, and during the serving of communion to the congregation. These may vary depending on your church's guidelines.

Whether you have chosen to celebrate formally or informally, whether it is a traditional church wedding or a family gathering in your own garden, I will be happy to help you select music that will make your ceremony truly special.

  • Rehearsal with organist or other musicians
  • Travel expenses (depending on location)
